Green Economy Expo 2024: Collaboration for a Sustainable Future of Indonesia’s Textile Industry

To shape a better future for the textile industry in Indonesia, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has established a strategic partnership with the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, Bandung Polytechnic School of Textile Technology (STTT), and PT Daur Langkah Bersama (Pable) through the Green Transition Investment Program (GTIP) project.

The Green Economy Expo 2024 event was an important moment for GGGI Indonesia to present the GTIP initiative, which is facilitated and funded by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by the Indonesian Government and textile startups. The project aims to realize the implementation of a circular economy in the textile sector.

Bappenas recently published Indonesia’s Circular Economy Roadmap and National Action Plan, which emphasizes addressing textile waste as one of the five prioritized sectors with the potential to adopt a circular approach.

“We found that textile waste in Indonesia is estimated to reach around 2.3 million tons per year and will continue to increase by 70% if there are no interventions. This partnership was initiated not only to manage textile waste but also as a collaborative effort to develop a circular textile ecosystem, which includes the creation of financial schemes and capacity building of circular textile industry players in Indonesia,” said Priyanto Rohmattullah, Bappenas Director of the Environment.

During the three-day Green Economy Expo, GGGI Indonesia successfully introduced the GTIP project and built awareness of the importance of textile waste management. Yorkie Sutaryo, GGGI Indonesia Senior Associate for Circular Economy, moderated the “Green Transition Lab” business presentation session, which featured four local startups committed to sustainable practices. “In the long run, the GTIP program aims to support local businesses in accessing various markets with sustainability standards that are currently quite strict,” said Yorkie.

GGGI Indonesia also received extensive media attention during the event, raising awareness about textile waste issues among the public.

The cooperation established through the GTIP is expected to bring Indonesia closer to a sustainable future, with a tangible positive impact on economic growth in Indonesia.
