East Kalimantan Upscales FMU Capacity

East Kalimantan is upscaling the capacity of Forest Management Units (FMU). The East Kalimantan Forestry Office as the leading institution through the newly inaugurated FMU Centre in collaboration with development partner organizations in the province design and facilitate series of capacity building activities for 21 FMUs in East Kalimantan Province which are planned to start in August 2018 onward to 2019.

A Training of Mindset Change & Basics of Business Plans Oriented Towards Emission Reduction was conducted in Samarinda, 1-2 August 2018, followed by a Workshop of Integrated Actions Learning for FMUs in East Kalimantan with the main theme of Developing and Applying Strategic Business Plans Oriented Towards Emission Reduction held in Samarinda, 27-29 August 2018. These are parts of the three phases of Actions Learning Workshops series: (1) Concept and Strategy Developments conducted in July – December 2018; (2) Actions and Activities Planning in January – June 2019; and (3) Implementation Preparation in July – October 2019.

These series of workshops aim to provide technical assistance and capacity building in order to provide inputs for Long Term Forest Management Plan (RPHJP) and to identify business opportunities by using strategic analysis and translate them into operational business plans. The key principles of the business plans are sustainable natural resources management which can generate regional income and contribute to independent funding resources for FMUs all at once to reduce GHG emissions from the deforestation and forest degradation and contribute to the Provincial Green Economy Master Plan.

The East Kalimantan Forestry Office (Dinas Kehutanan Prov. Kaltim) represented by Ir. H. Duratma Momo, the Head of Protection and Conservation of Ecosystem Natural Resources, in the opening of Integrated Actions Learning Workshop on 27th August 2018, encouraged all FMUs and development partner organizations in the province to strongly collaborate, “so that the FMUs as the front liners of forest management implementors are able to carry their tasks and achieve the targets. These trainings and workshops are expected to improve the capacity of FMUs to plan and formulize the business plans to be developed in the future and manage the forest in sustainable way contributing to the emission reduction. Furthermore, FMUs in East Kalimantan are able to organize their potentials in commodities and business in a far better way.”

This capacity building is part of the Enabling REDD-Oriented Forest Management and Investment in East Kalimantan, Indonesia (EROFM) supported by Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). GGGI actively provides technical assistance and capacity building for FMUs in East Kalimantan to develop Strategic Business Plans.
